Where did our Compassion go?

The other night, I sat in front of my TV with millions of others as the Sheriff department announced they found the body of Jessie Davis and her unborn daughter.

My heart broke.

A few days before that, I sat watching the news while they talked of a ring of Pedophiles caught and 31 children rescued from these horrendous animals.

I talked of these cases recently on a forum I frequent and was astonished at how many people have lost their compassion.

They question why this or that story is more important then another story. Why is this girl special? Why are any of these stories special?

They aren’t. There are stories that we never hear of. As I type this, someone is dying a horrible death, some child is being raped by a pedophile, some are dying of starvation, while others are killing each other.

I suppose if we let our hearts bleed for all, no blood would be left to sustain ourselves. But that’s not the way I think.

Within our world is a balance of extremes; Extreme hot vs. cold, wet vs. dry and so on. People are the same. Extreme right vs. left, good vs. evil, hate vs. love, compassion vs. indifference. I’ve talked of extremes before. They are needed in this world so that we know the difference of such things. Without extremes we couldn’t come together and compromise.

It seems these days, less are willing to compromise. So the extremes are making up the majority and ruling.

I would consider myself an extreme when it comes to Compassion. I take things personally, to heart and I can’t help it. My heart is on my sleeve, exposed to the elements,  the negativity and the helpless feelings.

I was stationed at Dover AFB, Delaware for 6 years. I saw the remains of the U.S.S. Cole victims come in on our ramp, I watched the fallen soldiers of Iraq and Afghanistan come thru and the astronauts from the Columbia Disaster.

I remember standing in the Tower, giving a NASA aircraft permission to land. It had been a few weeks since the Columbia disaster and I wasn’t prepared. They landed, parked on the ramp in front of the tower and began unloading caskets. The rest of the controllers saw this, turned back around and continued their joking and conversation. I was horrified.

I stood there and said a silent prayer and paid my respects as I always did when I saw fallen heroes come through. What I wanted to do after that was turn around and ask what was so important that they couldn’t give two seconds of their time to recognize what was right in front of them. But I didn’t. Instead, when I got home I called my Father and asked him why they didn’t care. He told me I was full of passion and that others just don’t see it as I do. He told me some people are afraid to care and some people just don’t care at all.

How depressing. And yet, sometimes I think they might be lucky. As they move on with their lives, I sit and remember the ones lost. Sometimes I lose sleep, sometimes I cry for them and I always talk to God about them. You could say I question my faith at times,  wondering why such innocence is lost. My only fear is that there is nothing after this life and they suffered something horrible for nothing.

An aquaintance asked me if I was alright the other day, he said I was taking everything to personal. If I don’t then who will? I know I’m not the only one, but we seem to be a dying breed.

Yet, hundreds of people came out to help find Jessie Davis. Many people worked together, seeing things most of us could never fathom, to catch a ring of over 700 pedophiles. Fireman risk their lives everyday putting out fires to save others. Our troops are fighting a war to help stabalize a Country which isn’t even ours. Policeman are roaming our streets trying to catch criminals, killers, drunk drivers. Others are volunteering, helping out those whos needs exceed our own.

What would this world be like if we didn’t have people who put others before themselves? It would be a pretty sad world.

So the next time you hear or read of a story where someone’s child has gone missing, a soldier has lost his life, a drunk Driver killed an innocent; Put yourself in that family’s place. You would want justice if it was close to you, you would want to find your loved one and you would hope that other’s felt just an ounce of what you are feeling, hoping someone would help.

Hope is Compassion and without it, we are cold and unforgiving.

Where’s Maddie?

FindMaddie.com

I’ve been avoiding this story. When you have children of your own, especially the same age as a child in the news with an uncertain fate, you can’t help but conjure up horrific images in your own mind of the “what if’s”.

Children go missing everyday. In search of numbers on the internet, I have found only statistical numbers for 2000. In that year :

  • In 2000 – 876,213 missing persons (adults and juveniles) were reported missing to the police and entered into the FBI’s National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer.
  • For the fifteenth time in the eighteen years since the passage of the Missing Children’s Act in 1982, the number of missing persons reported to the police increased. The 2000 reports were up 1% over 1999. The total increase since 1982 is 468% (154,341 entries in 1982 vs. 876,213 in 2000).
  • The FBI estimates that 85% – 90% of missing persons are juveniles. Thus, in approximately 750,000 cases (or 2,100 per day) the disappearance of a child was serious enough that a parent called the police, the police took a report, and the police entered that report into NCIC.
  • In 1990 Congress passed the National Child Search Assistance Act, mandating an immediate police report and NCIC entry in every case. Since 1990, NCIC missing persons reports have increased 32%.
  • The primary NCIC categories in which missing children reports are entered are:
  1. “Juvenile” – 685,617 cases, up .2% over 1999 (police enter most missing child cases in “Juvenile”, including some non-family abductions where there is no evidence of foul play).
  2. “Endangered” – 120,726 cases (adults and juveniles), an increase of 5.8% over 1999 (defined as “missing and in the company of another person under circumstances indicating that his or her physical safety is in danger”).
  3. “Involuntary” – 31,539 cases (adults and juveniles), a decrease of 1.1% from 1999 (defined as “missing under circumstances indicating that the disappearance was not voluntary; i.e., abduction or kidnapping”).

Here’s a scary statistic from 2006:

According to the latest online victimization research

· Approximately one in seven youth online (10 to 17- years-old) received a sexual solicitation or approach over the Internet.

· Four percent (4%) received an aggressive sexual solicitation – a solicitor who asked to meet them somewhere; called them on the telephone; or sent them offline mail, money, or gifts.

· Thirty- four percent (34%) had an unwanted exposure to sexual material – pictures of naked people or people having sex.· Twenty-seven percent (27%) of the youth who encountered unwanted sexual material told a parent or guardian. If the encounter was defined as distressing – episodes that made them feel very or extremely upset or afraid – forty-two percent (42%) told a parent or guardian. [David Finkelhor, Kimberly J. Mitchell, and Janis Wolak. Online Victimization of Youth: Five Years Later. Alexandria, Virginia: National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, 2006, pages 7-8, 33.]

And another:

· 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 10 boys will be sexually victimized before adulthood.
[D. Finkelhor. “Current Information on the Scope and Nature of Child Sexual Abuse.” The Future of Children: Sexual Abuse
of Children, 1994, volume 4, page 37.]

Most of these statistics can be found at missingkids.com

As one of the statistics above, myself, I certainly don’t want my son to face the same fate.

What happened to Maddie is every parents worst Nightmare.

This has gotten a lot of coverage, worldwide. Why? Because of the ease she was taken.

Some are questioning the parents. How could you leave your kids alone in the room?

For all those questioning, I say, “Shut Up”. You’ve done it too. Maybe not a hotel room, maybe their own room. How many times have you taken the trash out while your kids were asleep? Went and hung out in your backyard on a nice warm evening, the children sleeping safely in the house? If someone had their eye on your child, it wouldn’t matter where you were. When they are ready to try and grab your child they will. They will wait for you to make a mistake, to get complacent as we all can do.

From Court Tv’s Crime Library (A very informative site) :

The most reliable research available indicates that there are only 100-130 cases of stranger abductions a year in the

United States. These events are most frequently committed by males (86%) who are between the ages of 20 and 39 (57%). Again, the child was taken from an outdoor area in 54% of the cases but in 16% of the cases, the victim was abducted from his own yard or home.

Sometimes they are standing right next to you as in the case of Jaime Bulger, one of the most horrifying Child abduction cases I’ve ever read. (Warning, this story is highly disturbing).

My point is, you can’t have your eyes on your kids at all times.

I can imagine Maddie and her family’s day….3 kids, Nice warm day. I’m sure they were all worn out by the evening. Maddie’s parents were probably thinking about a nice quiet evening after a fun-filled but wearing day. They did everything we would of done. Checking on the kids every 15-20 minutes. That’s why this case has made Worldwide Coverage. Because in some way, we all can relate.

A couple of days ago I was stressing my feelings about the situation to my Mother.

And I told her this.

“Mom, I know this is going to sound…”Big Brotherish” and Paranoid but, If I could track my child via GPS, I’d do it in a heart beat. Wouldn’t even think twice. If it cost me a 100 dollars to call every time my son wasn’t where he was supposed to be or I feared anything, I would pay it everyday.”

Better safe then sorry. Well..to my surprise, this is actually an option.

Cell Phone companies offer GPS tracking thru your phones .

GPS-Enabled Cell Phones

The increased demand for enhanced 911 (e911) emergency calling capabilities, stimulated by the events of 11 September 2001, has pushed forward GPS tracking technology in cell phones. At the end of 2005, all cell phone carriers were required to provide the ability to trace cell phone calls to a location within 100 meters or less.

To comply with FCC requirements, cell phone carriers decided to integrate GPS technology into cell phone handsets, rather than overhaul the tower network. However the GPS in most cell phones are not like those in your handy GPS receiver that you take hiking. Most cell phones do not allow the user direct access to the GPS data, accurate location determination requires the assistance of the wireless network, and the GPS data is transmitted only if a 911 emergency call is made.

Also BrickhouseSecurity.com  offers GPS & Locator tracking devices for younger children and older :

From the site:

When the individual leaves a user-defined range, an alarm sounds on the portable Base Unit carried by the parent. The Base Unit can be put into “Find Mode,” used to assist in directing parents back to their children. Each Base Unit can monitor up to 4 tamper-proof Bracelets simultaneously, allowing up to 4 children to be monitored from a single Base Unit. Additional bracelets sold separately.

If the tamper-proof Bracelet is removed from the child’s wrist, a tamper alarm sounds instantly at the Base Unit to alert parents. Because the ionKids Child Monitor & Locator signal is not transmitted via cell towers, there are no recurring monthly charges. For added peace-of-mind, this unit comes with a 1 Year Factory Warranty against product defects.

Other websites I found for GPS tracking:

GPSNanny

911togo

IsaacDaniel Online (He created GPS shoes for adults ) Very Cool! A Children’s line is coming soon.

Maybe you think this screws with the trust between children/teens and adults or you’re thinking of Privacy issues. But when it comes to your kids, Privacy isn’t as important as keeping them out of the hands of a killer or sex offender. And Trust, well with teens, we’ve all been there. Could we be trusted? Not completely and you know it! If your teen gives you reason not to trust them, why not GPS them? Most teens won’t ditch their cell phone. 🙂

Think about it. Thinking that, “It could never happen to me” is not an answer. I’m not being pushy, but think about the possibilities of having this technology. And think about not having it, if your child goes missing.

Hate Crime? : Channon and Christian

christian_channon.jpg

Yesterday I updated you on Fox News covering this story via Bill Hemmer and “BYA” (Because you asked).

Michelle Malkin of hotair.com also mentioned this yesterday. (she has the video also)

I’m writing this because of the comments I have read.

The one clear outcry I hear is, “If this were 5 white people who had done this to a Black couple, it’d be all over the news”. And you would be right.

Why? Because the ilks of Sharpton and Jackson would be shoving it in our faces, showering the Press with how evil the white man can be.
So I ask you, Are we trying to do the same? I don’t think Black people are evil, do you?

I hope not! These 4 Black men and 1 black woman were evil. Just as every other murderer out there, Black, White, Asian, Indian….etc. Evil. Disgusting. If I had a say, I’d say they should die the way they killed their Victim. And then again, does that mean I’m stooping to their level?

So the question is, what are we to gain by this getting out in the National News Theater?

First, you have to discern whether this was a “Hate Crime” in the typical sense of the phrase. Did they purposely do this because they were white? And if it had been a Black couple, would they have had the same fate?

I’m not sure we can answer that and most likely, will never know unless it comes out in trial. But I will admit, that I have doubts it wasn’t.

My opinion? Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have been in the news a lot lately. Duke and Imus being the most recent of cases. Before the truth of Duke came out, I guarantee a lot of White people were pissed. Why? Because we thought the Duke players were animals. And truth be told, they made White people look like asses. This is a common phenomena these days. White people are trying to move on and far far away from the days of Slavery when Black people were looked down upon and treated like pure shit. The majority of us are not proud of this history. And yet, there are a number of Black people who won’t let us forget.  And maybe we shouldn’t, but damn it, there has got to come a time when we both look at ourselves and each other, admit to all our mistakes, Black and white and get the F*&% Over it. We can never move on if we keep blaming each other for things we had no Control over! I didn’t live back then and neither did you.

So, what does this have to do with Channon and Christian? Because just as white’s are shown their mistakes and evil ways via the news, so should Blacks. Black and White are both capable of horrendous acts and we need to admit to that.

Yesterday I came across this :

Knox Blacks Celebrate Carjacking Rapists in ‘Party’

St. Nicolas Thief, president and founder of Black Poverty Speaks, along with many local Knoxville blacks who live in the Washington Pike area has organized a social action protest celebration championing Lemaricus Davidson and Letalvis Cobbins.

Davidson and Cobbins are the brothers and two of the five suspects charged in the carjacking, kidnapping, rape and murder of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.

“We’re coordinating the celebration to to jive with the march angry whites are planning in memory of the victims and because of the ‘media black-out’ they note the case is receiving from national news networks,” Thief, who is currently stationed in Knoxville, said.

“We’re celebrating underprivileged Knoxville blacks who victimize privileged Knoxville whites,” he added.

I was going to post this yesterday but found I couldn’t find an actual “news” link or “newspaper” link to this story.

I found the source was a white supremist blog. Ugh.

Yes the White Supremest/Nazi’s are pushing this story hard. I felt dirty just being on the site.

Nevertheless, if both are true (the plannings of a March by the Nazi’s/Black Poverty Speaks) I say, I’m fine with it.

Why? Because we need extremists in this country. HOLD ON NOW…I don’t want to lose you yet.

When I see or stumble upon a White Supremest website or person, I am reminded of how much I don’t want to be like them. That I am disgusted by their behavior. I assume the same for a majority of Blacks or hope that when you see a group like “Black Poverty Speaks” you say the same thing.

Extremists are at either side of the spectrum..FARRRRRRRRRR on the other side, it’s up to the rest of us to come somewhere in the middle.

LaShawn’s Barber Cornertalked of this a couple of days ago also…as have numerous other blogs. But LaShawn is Black. She is a columnist for the Washington Examiner and has the same opinion that alot of us do, that this Murder was horrific and why aren’t we hearing about it. And let me be clear, I only note the fact that she is Black because of the story.

Reading her post, reinforced my own thoughts about this. It’s good to see evil in the world so the rest of us can come together and acknowledge our condemnation of it.

UPDATE: Christopher and Channon

Your voices have been heard! Bill Hemmer talked of the case on Fox News this morning. The details were limited but…at least it got out there. Hopefully this will be a snowball effect!

Blogging and writing the major news outlets will get this story out there.

Nothing to link to except the old wire stories… But I’ll keep my eye open.

A Horrifying Murder..Bet you never heard about it.

I was blog surfing when I came across “Errant Thoughts from a Disquieted Mind“.

Horrifying, Disgusting..I have no more words. Her Blog post is below.

The Unspeakable Murders of Channon and Christopher

May 16th, 2007 ·

I can find no words to describe the inconceivable evil that five human beings brought against two young people, one a senior in sociology at the University of Tennessee, at the beginning of this year.  I have struggled to even partially comprehend the level of attrocities, the terror committed, the pain inflicted upon two other human beings.  And I remain stunned in the aftermath of verifing this tragedy is very real.

This is a story that has not hit the mainstream media and would not be noticed at all, if not for the local Knoxville press and the blogosphere at large.  Like me, people across America and beyond are struggling to understand why this story has received practically no coverage when this case sincerely makes the Missouri monster, Michael Devlin, seem like a boy scout in comparison.  And Devlin’s attrocities committed against two young boys will have me cheering if and when he is put to death…if I live so long to see it.

This case is much, much worse across the board.

Is the evil committed in this case too gruesome for media to report?  (Doubtful.)  Is it that murder has become so commonplace today that this attrocity is not even considered “news” in our wholly narcissistic society?  (Perhaps.)  Is it because there was no chase to cover, no developing story to grab our attention, no manifesto sent by these evils to NBC?  (Undoubtedly.)

Could it be that our mainstream media has a specific agenda regarding race and hate crimes, under which this story doesn’t have a place?  Is it that the two murdered young people were white and the five evil monsters who carjacked the couple, gang-raped and sodomized them, mutilated and tortured them so horribly were black thugs…and there is no Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson to find this event reprehensible and scream for justice?  (Inarguably.)

I join a quickly growing host of people who seek answers and absolutely demand that this story be told.  And I ask you to join me in doing the same.  Regardless of one’s opinion as to why this story has not received attention and far beyond the fact that the assailants are black, their hatred of humanity is terrifyingly clear for the world to see through their methods of orchestrating the ends of two innocent, young lives.

May God bless and bring comfort to the families and so many friends of Channon Christian, 21, and 23-year-old Christopher Newsom.

Be clearly warned:  This post is extremely graphic.

On Saturday evening, January 6, 2007, Christopher and Channon left on a date to have dinner and find fun in Knoxville.  At around 12:30 a.m., Channon called her parents and told her father that they were headed to join some friends at one of their houses, but would be home in a couple of hours.

But the couple never made it.  They met the incarnations of evil.

At a location that authorities will not release, Channon and Christopher were carjacked by three black thugs.  They were robbed and beaten, bound, gagged and blindfolded, and taken to a house where a young black woman only 18 years of age, was there waiting to join the party. Once at the house, Christopher was repeatedly sodomized and gang-raped by ALL four and brutally beaten, while Channon was forced to watch and listen to his screams of agony as the evil ones laughed and drooled in their joy.  Then the group turned their sights to Channon and ALL four repeatedly and brutally gang-raped and sodomized her, while Christopher was forced to watch and listen helplessly.

At some point during that Sunday, it was reported the group used a box cutter to castrate Christopher, forcing Channon to watch this unbearable torture.  Then he was shot three times.  At some point, Christopher was soaked with gasoline and set afire, but I can find no credible information as to when or where.  Christopher was wrapped up in bedsheets and/or a comfortor and taken away by one of the thugs to be dumped nearby.  Police have clearly stated their belief that Christopher was dead by nightfall.

Meanwhile, the remaining four continued to rape, beat, sodomize and urinate upon Channon repeatedly, and they did so throughout Sunday and late into the night before Monday’s dawn.  They sprayed a household disenfectant into her mouth and other orifices – not to poison or kill her, but to try and destroy their DNA evidence.  The evils used the same box cutter to completely sever one of her breasts, apparently while she was still alive.  She may have been strangled and she was certainly set afire.  Then Channon was completely dismembered, her body parts thrown into trash bags. And the incarnates of evil scattered to the four winds. When Channon and Christopher failed to return home that Sunday morning, nor could either be reached by cell phone overnight, their frantic parents notified Knoxville police and a large scale search ensued across the area.Shortly after Noon that Sunday, Christopher’s body was found by a railroad worker wrapped in “a sheet or a comfortor,” laying where it had been thrown alongside some railroad tracks on the seedy east side of town.  His body had been mutilated and beaten mercilessly, he had been bound with rope or bootlaces, shot three times, and his body had been badly burned using an accellerant. When Channon could not be found overnight, a search warrant was issued to her cell phone provider and they were finally able to trace her phone signal to the nearest tower by the end of the day.  Her family and police found her abandoned vehicle  late Monday only about two blocks away from where Christopher’s body was found and, by the way, about two blocks from where their tortures and murders had been committed. From the vehicle, forensic teams were able to lift a fingerprint that was a perfect match for one Lamaricus Devall Davidson, a local thug who was released in August 2006 after serving time in the state penitentiary for multiple convictions on aggravated robbery and carjacking from Madison County.

On Tuesday mid-afternoon, Police swarmed Davidson’s residence of record, a rental home he shared with his half-brother Letalvis Cobbins and Cobbins’ live-in lover, Valerie Coleman, 18.  Cobbins is also a convicted felon.  He was convicted on felonious third-degree attempted robbery in Queens County, New York in 2003, although I cannot ascertain if he ever spent any time behind bars.

Police found no one inside the house and the front door was open.  What they did find was an unrecognizable body that had been brutalized, mutilated, dismembered and contained within five separate trash bags stuffed into a large trash can in the kitchen.  The Knox County ME later identified the body as Channon Christian.

Police now began a search for Davidson and Cobbins, whom they described as “persons of interest.”

On Thursday morning, county, state and federal authorities tracked down Cobbins and George Thomas hiding out at a friend’s home in Lebanon, Kentucky.  Later that afternoon, police tracked down Davidson hiding out in a vacant house in the Mechanicsville area.  When police apprehended him, he began crying uncontrollably, according to a statement made by the Knox County DA.

In two separate searches of the residence (before and after Davidson’s arrest), police seized a ton of inflamatory evidence in addition to the loaded .22 pistol police recovered from Davidson’s person and a .9mm taken from Cobbins at the time of their arrests.  There was a .30 caliber rifle, two empty boxes of .22 ammo, a few empty .22 casings, a 9mm magazine (with Cobbins’ fingerprints), loose .22 and .38 Special bullets, gasoline- and blood-soaked clothing, blankets and clothing fragments, hair, socks, shoes, a gun cleaning kit, several cell phones, a silver I-Pod, a near empty spray bottle of household disinfectant, two red gas cans, and a plastic bag with more hair and socks…to name merely a few of the police evidence listings.

Soon after the initial three arrests, police began chatting with Vanessa Coleman, Cobbins’ live-in and mother of his two young children.  Coleman was discovered when police raided the Lebanon, KY house to find Cobbins and Thomas.  Considered a witness at first, she described to police what had happened in the house and that she had seen some of the attrocities.  As is now known, she was a very active participant every step of the way of  Channon’s and Christopher’s torture and demise.

Coleman was finally arrested in early February in Lebanon, Kentucky and fought extradition back to Tennessee for weeks.  She’s there now, though.  Unlike the other thugs, Coleman (also indigent) managed to secure representation by a private attorney, although people cannot conceive of who is paying what will be her huge legal tab.  All of the attorneys are certified as being qualified to represent death penalty cases.

Meanwhile, back at the jail, Davidson, Cobbins and Thomas all coughed up blame on each other after their arrests, and Davidson provided the name of  a fourth man, Eric Boyd.  It was Boyd, they said, who had taken Christopher’s dead body away.  Boyd was the worst one of all, they all declared.  Boyd was soon picked up, as well.

To make a long and potentially confusing legal story short, there are federal and state crimes cited in this matter.  Davidson, Cobbins and Thomas each face 46 charges from the Knox County Grand Jury of premeditated murder, kidnapping, rape, robbery and theft.  Vanessa Coleman also faces 40 charges from Knox County of premeditated murder, kidnapping, rape, robbery and theft.  There are also weapons charges involved, since Davidson and Cobbins were felons.

As you will see if you view the indictment linked below and review these statutes, these charges are vague and wide and, as such, will give a jury a great deal of room with which to convict these monsters.

Federal carjacking charges were also filed against Davidson, Cobbins and Thomas, although those charges were withdrawn.  In my opinion, the reason for this is so that the state may go forward on their case and, in the event the jury fails to serve sound judgement or deliver significant sentences, the feds can then reinstate their charges under a separate trial.  And the fed charges carry very hefty mandatory sentences.

Eric Boyd, a convicted serial robber and fellow felon, was No Billed by Knox County on all the counts levied against his thug pals, but has been indicted by the Federal Grand Jury as an accessory after the fact.  This thug was contacted by Davidson during the wee hours of Monday morning, who described to Boyd the carjacking, tortures and murders at his house.  Boyd helped Davidson to escape the area later that evening.  Boyd let Davidson make a myriad of phone calls from his own cell phone and helped him break into the vacant house on Reynolds Street in the Mechanicsville neighborhood, where police later apprehended Davidson and the .22 pistol he was carrying.

The level of complete depravity of these five is horrific in itself and, at very least of the issues involved, is that this case provides a clear snapshot of the level to which our society has plunged.

Monsters walk among us.

A hearing on various pretrial motions in the cases of Davidson, Cobbins and Thomas and Coleman is scheduled for Thursday afternoon, May 17 in Knoxville.
